FULL TEXT OF SLIDES: I've wanted to introduce this concept for some time, but I am also committed to not posturing as a "parenting expert." I like to say I do very little "parenting." All parenthood is really discipleship, and viewing it from that perspective can free us from unrealistic expectations. Exegesis is the work of a pastor. We exegete the Word of God. We exegete our congregations. We exegete the context where we do ministry. This is the tool set you need in order to disciple your kids faithfully and skilfully.Exegetical parenting is framed around the work of a pastor as he shepherds his flock. As a parent, you are a pastor to your kids, so the tools are readily transferrable! 1. The Exegesis of the Word 2. The Exegesis of the Child.3. The Exegesis of the World. The task of a parent is to pursue parenting in a way that brings these three together. Let's look at each piece of this tool kit. 1. The Exegesis of the Word. First we need to understand the Word and ensure our kids also understand it. The primary task of parenting is to teach our kids the Bible. (See Deuteronomy 6, Proverbs, etc)Second, exegesis must determine how we parent and disciple our kids! If we are faced with a parenting question, our first duty is to find out whether and how scripture speaks to it. 2. The Exegesis of the Child. The Bible is authoritative, but it's not persnickety. Typically, Scripture presents guardrails that leave broad fields for freedom, and attention to the Spirit, along with discernment, which we'll talk about in #3. Every child is unique, and how we obey within these broad fields of should reflect our deep study of our individual kids. The Bible word for this is "affection," and affection is not possible without attention.3. The Exegesis of the World. The World is the arena for Christian discernment.Once we understand our children deeply, we can be discerning about how to prepare them for life in the world where they'll one day be sent out as ambassadors of Christ.

Once our kids learn to pray, God becomes real to them. It’s much more difficult to walk away from a God you know and relate with on a daily basis. If you want your kids to follow Jesus for a lifetime, teach them to pray. Here’s how:1. Give them a model. That’s you! How you pray is how your kids will pray—at least until they learn better. Lord willing we’ll all raise kids who learn to pray better than we do!  2. Give them a framework. Give your kids a tool to think about prayer. With my own kids, I have taught them to start with thanksgiving and then voice their needs/desires. As they get older I plan to teach them the “ACTS” framework, which stands for Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, and Supplication. Giving our kids a simple tool like this will help them pray with more confidence. 3. Give them space. Carving out designated space for prayer will help your kids see its importance. Not only that, but it’s these intentional moments of prayer that will lead to what’s even better: constant prayer. Their habit has to start somewhere. By God’s design, that somewhere is your intentionality. Following those steps won’t make instant prayer warriors of your kids, but it will get them going in the right direction!   You can do this! Why not start right now? Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you (and your kids). 👊🏼 🙏🏼

If we want our kids to thrive, then we need to change our mindsets. Our goal isn’t to merely educate and entertain them but to equip and commission them. We’re called to equip children with the right knowledge and skills in the faith so they can feed themselves spiritually while fulfilling the Great Commission in their homes and community (Ephesians 4:11-13).
